2022 Summer Event Guide!

Hello! My name is MooingCat and welcome to my guide for the 2022 Summer Event! In this guide I will go through the mechanics of the event, the different rewards and my thoughts on which are best, as well as how to get the most out of this event!

I also have a video version of this guide if you prefer video! (Not out yet, enjoy this random one while we wait :P)

Table of Contents

Rewards: New Buildings (top)

Before we get into the mechanics and strategies, let's have a quick look at the rewards you can get from this event, starting with the new ones!

Main Building: Privateer's Boathouse (Buccaneer's & Deadman's Boathouse)! (top)

The main building for this event is the brand new Privateer's Boathouse. This is a relatively small building at 4x4, with two variations at max level (level 11): the Buccaneer's Boathouse and the Deadman's Boathouse! Both give the same amounts of Population, Happiness, Coins, and Medals, and they both also give a new type of reward, a "bounty" chest. This is a new mechanic for a building, it will give you a chest with various rewards directly to your inventory, so that you can open it when you want (you can look at them as FP packs, though without the option to spend directly from them, you do have to open them manually)! Below is an overview of what each variation gives in addition to the common stuff:

  • Privateer's Boathouse Lv11: Buccaneer's Boathouse
    • Production: 20 Goods
    • Boost: 12-21% Defense boost for attacking army (0.67-1.17 per tile w/road)
    • Boost: 12-22% Attack boost for city defense (0.67-1.22 per tile w/road)
    • Buccaneer's Bounty (chest):
      • 8 Forge Points
      • 1 Fragment of One Up Kit
      • 1 Fragment of 30% Defense Boost
      • 1 Blueprint

  • Privateer's Boathouse Lv11: Deadman's Boathouse
    • Production: 18 Goods
    • Boost: 8-17% Attack boost for attacking army (0.44-0.94 per tile w/road)
    • Boost: 13-23% Defense boost for city defense (0.72-1.28 per tile w/road)
    • Deadman's Bounty (chest):

Which should you go for? This depends on what you want, with the main difference being Attack vs Defense for attacking army. Personally I think Deadman's is more appealing, partly because it gives attack boost, but also because I think the Deadman's Bounty is better than the Buccaneer's Bounty. You do lose 2 FPs, but you gain 25 Guild Goods and a 2h Mass Supply Rush fragment, which I think are better than the other rewards from the Buccaneer's Bounty.

Is it worth getting? The Boathouse isn't amazing in terms of the boost it gives, but it's relatively small and has some nice additional rewards, so I would probably build it in most cities.

Grand Prizes (top)

As seems to be standard now, you have two sets of "grand prizes". The main ones you unluck as usual, with a second set of rewards locked beyond a 1200 diamond one-time payment (event pass, or "Summer Prizes"). The event pass is not required to get the main building, so if you're free to play (or don't think it's worth it) you can ignore them without losing anything. Below you can see lists of the Grand Prizes that appeared on beta, though there may be some changes on the live servers. (If there are I'll update this after the event has started).

Grand Prizes:

  1. 25 Forge Points
  2. Boathouse Upgrade Kit
  3. Bazaar
  4. Boathouse Upgrade Kit
  5. Shrine of Knowledge
  6. Boathouse Upgrade Kit
  7. Tactician's Tower Lv1
  8. Boathouse Upgrade Kit
  9. 6h Mass Supply Rush
  10. Boathouse Upgrade Kit
  11. Witch Doctor
  12. Boathouse Upgrade Kit
  13. 25 Forge Points
  14. Boathouse Upgrade Kit
  15. Mass Self-Aid
  16. Boathouse Upgrade Kit
  17. Rogue Hideout
  18. Boathouse Lv1
  19. Store Building
  20. Boathouse Upgrade Kit
  21. 30% Def Boost
  22. Boathouse Upgrade Kit
  23. Renovation Kit

After Grand Prize 22 you start again at Grand Prize 1.

The Milestone Rewards for this event give you some building pieces and event currency, as usual :)

Event Pass: Forge Fountain (top)

This event also has another new building, the 2x2 Forge Fountain. This is a "premium" building only obtainable through the Event Pass, and it's also the first building of a brand new building type, "Limited Buildings". As the name implies, this building has limited uses. For the Forge Fountain this means that after 5 days it loses its main bonus, and reverts to a simple decoration building giving 250 happiness.

What is this bonus? For the first 5 days, the Forge Fountain gives a 10% Forge Point Boost, boosting the FP productions in your city. This only works for regular buildings (such as event buildings) in your city, not Great Buildings or the Town Hall. The Forge Fountain will only boost the production of buildings that give 5 or more Forge Points. This is because the reward after boost is rounded to the nearest whole number, so anything below 0.5 will be rounded down to 0. For example, 3 FPs is boosted to 3.3 FPs, but rounded down again to 3 FPs.

You can not use a store building kit on the Forge Fountain after placing it (you have to delete it to get rid of it), and it can not be sold to the Antiques Dealer.

Personally, I don't like the idea of a limited building, and because it only boosts buildings giving 5 or more FPs I don't think the boost is particularly good either. So for me, this is a big miss.

Event Pass / Summer Prizes: For a complete list check here: https://forgeofempires.fandom.com/wiki/2022_Summer_Event#Summer_Bonus_Prizes I won't list all here (most are quite insignificant), but here are all the buildings:

  • 0) Forge Fountain (new building)
  • 2) Wishing Well
  • 4) Checkmate Square
  • 6) Sentinel Outpost Upgrade
  • 10) Sentinel Outpost Lv1
  • 12) Sunken Treasure
  • 14) WW Shrink Kit
  • 16) SoK Upgrade
  • 18) Winners' Plaza Upgrade
  • 20) Log Cabin
  • 26) Wishing Well
  • 32) WW Shrink Kit
  • 38) Wishing Well

(that's as far as we can see, but there are probably more buildings later on as well)

Wheel of Fortune Prizes (top)

This event does not have daily specials, instead you use your currency to spin a wheel to get random prizes, but more on that in the chapters below! It is still possible to get selection kits for previous event buildings, but it's a bit more complicated. Still, below you can find a select list of rewards you can get from the wheel, for a complete list check out the fandom wiki. I've split the daily specials into two sections: attack buildings & production buildings.

You can also compare all the buildings in my new Sortable Table with this link (including the Boathouse):

Attack Buildings (for attacking army):

  • Gold Prize: Governor's Villa Lv9
    • Reasons to get: Good attack boost, unit production, ok other productions
    • Size: 5x6 (road required)
    • Boost: 16-35% Attack | 1.67-3.89 per DS | 0.49-1.08 per Tile (including roads)
    • Other: 4 Units, 8 Forge Points, 35 Goods, Population, Happiness, Coins

  • Gold Prize: Pirate's Hideout Lv9
    • Reasons to get: Good attack boost, good other productions
    • Size: 5x6 (road required)
    • Boost: 17-33% Attack | 1.89-3.67 per DS | 0.52 - 1.02 per Tile (including roads)
    • Other: 16 Forge Points, 27.2 Goods, Population, Happiness, Coins, Supplies, Medals

  • Gold Prize: Captain's Anchorage (Lv1)
    • Reasons to get: Good defense per daily special, good in lower ages
    • Size: 5x2 (no road required)
    • Boost: 8% Defense | 8 per DS | 0.8 per Tile (when chained to Pirate's Hideout)
    • Other: Happiness

  • Gold Prize: Sentinel Outpost Lv. 1 + Up.
    • Reasons to get: Highest defense efficiency (in event & game), very small and easy to place, you know why it's good!
    • Size: 1x1 (no road required)
    • Boost: 2% / 4% Defense for Level 1 / 2

My recommendations: To be honest, all of these are good, and due to the nature of this event, it's not that easy to choose which to go for. So I would probably go for multiple of these, and get what you're missing from the Antiques Dealer and/or next year's event.

Productions (FPs / Goods):

  • Gold Prize: Pirate's Hideout Lv9
    • Reasons to get: Best FP & good Goods efficiency, additional attack boost
    • Size: 5x6 (road required)
    • FPs: 16 FPs | 1.78 per DS | 0.49 per Tile (including roads)
    • Goods: 27.2 Goods (32% chance of 85) | 3.02 per DS | 0.84 per Tile (including roads)
    • Other: Attack Boost, Population, Happiness, Coins, Supplies, Medals

  • Gold Prize: Crow's Nest Lv8
    • Reasons to get: Good FP & Goods efficiency, gives diamonds every now and then :O
    • Size: 5x5 (road required)
    • FPs: 12.8 FPs (8+40% chance of 12) | 1.6 per DS | 0.47 per Tile (including roads)
    • Goods: 20 Goods (40% chance of 50) | 2.5 per DS | 0.73 per Tile (including roads)
    • Other: Diamonds (1.25 per day on average) Population, Coins, Medals

  • Gold Prize: Fisherman's Pier (Lv1)
    • Reasons to get: Best FP per prize, good FP efficiency, great combined with Blue Galaxy if you have many of these chained to a Pirate's Hideout.
    • Size: 5x2 (no road required)
    • FPs: 4 FPs | 4 per DS | 0.4 per Tile (when chained to Pirate's Hideout)
    • Goods: 0 Goods
    • Other: Happiness

  • Gold Prize: Governor's Villa Lv9
    • Reasons to get: Best Goods efficiency, unit production, attack boost
    • Size: 5x6 (road required)
    • FPs: 8 FPs | 0.89 per DS | 0.25 per Tile (including roads)
    • Goods: 35 Goods | 3.89 per DS | 1.08 per Tile (including roads)
    • Other: 4 Units, 16-35% Attack, Population, Happiness, Coins

  • Gold Prize: Shark Shallows (Lv1)
    • Reasons to get: Best Goods per prize, good Goods efficiency, great combined with Blue Galaxy if you have many of these chained to a Pirate's Hideout.
    • Size: 5x2 (no road required)
    • FPs: 0 FPs
    • Goods: 9 | 9 per DS | 0.9 per Tile (when chained to Pirate's Hideout)
    • Other: Happiness

Again, this is not a complete list, but these are the best IMO :)

My Recommendations: This is really up to personal preference, and again because it's hard to select which prices to go for you might be better off just going for any of these, and get the remaining pieces from the Antiques Dealer and/or next year's event. That said, the two chain buildings, particularly the Fisherman's Pier, are probably the easiest buildings to use, as you don't need a specific amount of them to use them (chained to a Pirate's Hideout). If you're looking for diamonds the Crow's Nest is about as good as a Wishing Well, but takes up quite a bit more space. The other rewards make it a better all-round building than Wishing Wells in my opinion, but if you're purely after diamonds it's not that great.

Situational:

If none of the buildings above interest you, there are always some situational / nice-to-have items like the One Up Kit, Store Building, Mass Self-Aid Kit, and different resources / units. No Wishing Well (or shrink kit) appeared on beta.

Quest "Cheat List" (top)

Below you'll find my "cheat list" for the quests in this event. This is not a complete list of quests, that you can find here. This is a list of quests you might need to plan ahead for, but I always recommend that you check out the complete list yourself to see if there are any other quests you might find challenging. Also, only the "difficult" part of a quest will be shown. For example, a part like "pay X coins" will not be included. Also note that there may be changes from Beta to the Live Servers.

Event Mechanics (top)

Event Currency (top)

The main event currency for this event is the Doubloon, with a secondary currency of Compasses to progress towards Grand Prizes. A Doubloon can be used to spin the wheel once, which will generate a compass, so 1 Doubloon = 1 Compass. In total, you can get:

  • Starting amount: 3
  • Daily Logins: 22*2 = 44
  • Rush Quests: 34*1 = 34
  • Daily Quests: 21*2 = 42
  • Quest Milestones: 4 + 8 = 12
  • Total: 135 Doubloons / Compasses

Basics: Wheel of Fortune (top)

The mechanics for this event might seem complicated at first, but once you learn how it works it's very simple. In fact, you can only really do 3 things:

1) Spin: This will spin the wheel in exchange for 1 Doubloon, and you will get whatever prize you land on. After you have pressed this button you can press a Stop button to stop the wheel early, but this has no impact on which reward you get. The reward is determined immediately after you spin the wheel, the rest is just an animation that the stop button makes a bit shorter. When you claim a reward, you remove that reward from the wheel. Depending on the rarity ("Colour") of the prize it can be won 1 ("Gold"), 2 ("Silver"), or 4 ("Green") times before it is completely removed from the wheel. This means that as prizes are removed from the wheel, the chance of getting one of the remaining prizes is higher, which is important for strategies.

There is one additional thing to keep in mind, the Wheel and its prizes are shared with your Neighbourhood. This means that you and all your neighbours play on the same wheel, towards the same prizes. If a prize is claimed by one of your neighbours, that also removes it for you. This is also important for strategies ;)

2) Refresh & Spin: This will first reset the wheel, replacing all the rewards and refilling all the slots of each prize, and then it will spin the wheel. From here it's exactly the same as a regular spin. Refresh & Spin also costs 1 Doubloon.

3) Sail: Whenever you spin the wheel, you gain 1 Compass. These compasses can be used to Sail a ship towards the next Grand Prize. Each compass will progress you 1, 2, or 3 steps towards the next Grand Prize, with 20 total steps required each time (extra steps are carried over to next board). So on average, you will progress 2 steps for each time you spin the wheel, but more on that below when I go over if you can get the main building fully leveled or not.

Piggy Bank (top)

If you land on a reward with a Piggy Bank icon, you will also "get" a reward added to your Piggy Bank. The Piggy Bank works like the Raindeer Sleigh from the winter event: rewards are added to it, but to claim those rewards you have to spend 2995 Diamonds. The price is the same regardless of how many rewards you have in your Piggy Bank, so if you plan to buy them you should do so after filling all the 8 slots with rewards.

If this is worth it or not depends on the rewards and if you're planning to spend diamonds, but I think for most players the Piggy Bank will not be worth it.

Event Strategies: Spin the Wheel... (top)

So yeah ... when it comes to strategies there isn't really a lot to talk about. In terms of Grand Prizes, it makes no difference whatsoever when you spend your Doubloons, so if you don't care about the prizes you can just spend whenever / however you want to.

If you want to get as many of the specific wheel rewards that you want, it becomes a bit more strategic, but not too much IMO. Because of the fact that you share the same wheel with your neighbours, you can choose to strategically play to maximize the good rewards you get. This is a game of patience, luck, and judgment, but if you have the possibility to check in on the wheel often you can definitely get a lot of good rewards.

The basic idea is to let your neighbours claim the lesser value rewards, removing those options from the wheel and thus increasing your chance of landing on a valuable reward when you choose to play. This does of course have the risk of them claiming the valuable rewards before you have a chance to play (as can be seen in the example above), so it's a game of patience, luck, and judgment on when the best time to start spinning the wheel yourself is. I can't tell you at which point this is, you will have to judge that for yourself. The more often you can check the wheel, the more picky you can be. If you miss a reward it's no problem, you can simply try again later. If you can't check in often, you might have to join in earlier to prevent any of your neighbours from grabbing the reward.

Just keep in mind your neighbours are probably doing the same as you, don't be surprised if you end up "fighting" against some of your neighbours for the good rewards :)

And, well, if you see your enemies going for a valuable reward, you can always help them out by refreshing the wheel, I'm sure they'll really appreciate that ;)

Can you get Privateer's Boathouse fully leveled for free? (top)

This depends on if you completed enough quests in the Fellowship Event to get the Event Surprise Box:

  • With Surprise Box: Most Likely Yes
  • Without Surprise Box: Most Likely No

Because each Doubloon/Compass is worth 1, 2, or 3 steps, getting the Boathouse fully leveled does involve some luck. You can find a simulator at the end of this guide that will calculate the chances of getting the building fully leveled with a given number of Doubloons.

As mentioned above, you get 135 Doubloons for free, and judging by incident drop-rates on Beta you will not get a lot more from there, so let's use 140 Doubloons as our base number.

Each Doubloon is worth 2 steps towards the Grand Prize, on average, so the expected number of steps is 280. To get the main building fully leveled you need 260 if you have the surprise box, or 300 if you don't have the surprise box. This means that if you have the surprise box, you will with average luck get the building fully leveled, but without the surprise box you will not. Averages aren't always that useful, though, so let's instead look at the chance of getting enough steps:

As can be seen in the graph above, if you have the surprise box you have a 98.4% chance of getting the main building fully leveled. So it's not guaranteed, but very likely. Still, a 1.6% chance of missing out does mean that 1 of your guild members will miss out, if you spend 140 Doubloons. On the flip side, if you don't have the event surprise box you only have a 2.1% chance of getting the main building fully leveled with 140 Doubloons, so out of a guild of 80 only 1-2 will be able to get it.

How many diamonds per additional Privateer's Boathouse? (top)

You need 11 Levels for an additional Boathouse, or 22 Grand Prizes. Each Grand Prize is 20 steps, so you need a total of 440 steps per additional Boathouse. Each Doubloon is 2 steps on average, so on average you need 220 Doubloons per fully leveled Boathouse. You can buy 20 Doubloons for 1750 diamonds, so you need 1750*(220/20) = 19 250 Diamonds per fully leveled Boathouse.

With that said, the Piggy Bank does have a chance of giving you selection kits for the Boathouse. The price per level from Grand Prizes is 1750 diamonds, so if you get 2 or more upgrades for the Boathouse in the Piggy Bank it will be cheaper to spend 2995 Diamonds to claim those. You could also consider claiming them regardless for a chance to get more selection kits from the next 8 rewards, but I don't know the drop-rate so I can't really give advice one way or the other, I'll leave that up to you.

Interactive Simulation of the Event! (top)

Finally, I'd like to share my interactive simulation of the event! To use the simulation, simply change out the values to your own values, then click the "Run" button (black triangle) to simulate the event.

  • Doubloons = number of doubloons you have to spend
  • num_iterations = number of "events" simulated. The higher the number the more accurate the distribution, I'd use 20-30k+.

If you want to see the code itself, check out the "simulation.py" file in the widget below.
